Our goal is to advance understanding and drive innovation in key areas of computer science.
The research at our institute spans a wide range, from exploring the foundational principles of algorithms and investigating systems like the internet to multimodal fields such as computer vision, computer graphics, databases and information systems, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. By integrating these diverse areas and fostering a culture of collaboration, we operate at the highest scientific standards and work to shape the computing systems of tomorrow.

Saarland Informatics Campus
The Saarland Informatics Campus (SIC) is one of the leading locations for computer science in Germany and Europe. Four world-renowned research institutes, namely the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, and the Center for Bioinformatics along with Saarland University and its three departments (Computer Science, Mathematics, Language Science and Technology) together cover the entire spectrum of computer science.
Partnership with Google
In 2022 the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Informatics in Saarbrücken (Germany) and Google established a strategic partnership: the Saarbrücken Research Center for Visual Computing, Interaction and Artificial Intelligence (VIA) at the MPI for Informatics. The center investigates basic frontier research challenges in computer graphics, computer vision, and human machine interaction, at the intersection to artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Doctoral Research Program
The International Max Planck Research School on Trustworthy Computing (IMPRS-TRUST) is a graduate program jointly run by the Max Planck Institute for Informatics, the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, the Computer Science Department at Saarland University, and the Computer Science Department at TU Kaiserslautern.
